Why am I always blogging about the major events?

Maybe because I only realise the existence of this blog then. (sheepish look)

Anyway, it was a fantastic concert - well, of course there were the pitching and rhythmic problems, but that aside, the repertoire was excellent fare, the musicians were passionate, and even the audience was a pretty helpful bunch haha. Concerts always make one feel exhilarated, but this one was particularly heartwarming because you could really feel that the music had gone out to the audience. Maybe because SCH is cosier than Esplanade, but to see all of them cheer so loudly when dong1 ended, was a clear sign of the success the concert had achieved.

What I think really makes it even more of a success, is what the juniors thought of RJCO at the end of it all. I've been blogsurfing (haha) and it really shows - from the initial discomfort of the seemingly lackadaisical attitudes of fellow members/change in environment/conductor, to an attitude finally embracing all these differences as necessary to achieve that final glowing moment on stage. It's even more heartening to note that these juniors are also going all out to declare that they will strive hard for SYF next year as well. Haven't really seen such strong desires in a long time! I mean, I don't remember our batch being all that gungho even after the Esplanade concert haha...remember our sad attendances in Term 3...(oops okay). AND laozhou says our batch was united, so that says a lot hahaha.

Well then, shall ask the juniors to come up with another blog 'cos this one doesn't seem to allow any more people to come write in it other than KB and I - or rather, nobody knows how to configure it so that it will be more welcoming. Meanwhile, it's just nice to know that RJCO is getting along - pretty nicely (:

P.S. Thanks to the xyz juniors in particular, you guys made me feel part of you all again (:

Haha ray lol seems like my prelim results ain't that good haha, so have to think short term haha...can't predict any long term plans from that sucky thing i've got...oh well shan't complain too much here haha...hope everybody do well eventually lah...of course i desperately miss those co days haha....but u know time doesn't wait..once its over, its time to move on and find new stuffs to get busy with...like if there is no more fun to seek from co..then hmm maybe move on to another co and find new fun? haha okay u get what i mean? shan't keep saying how i miss those days, but i shall say that those days are really precious memories...haha

I have come to revive this blog from its deep slumber of about ... 5 months! O.o

I was actually too lazy to do it before, but reading Hee Xun's entry in the guanyue blog quite inspired me. It's really funny the way he thanked his sectionmates, but yet it's quite thoughtful of him at the same time.

But since I wrote all of you notes I think I won't go into it la. (In fact, this reminds me that the juniors should start getting access to this blog! Though - how many juniors do we have ah? :S)

Anyway, onto SYF:

Well, I guess a lot of us have mixed feelings (or none) about the whole event, but actually the Gold doesn't resonate at all anymore. If you ask me to look back on SYF 2007, the first thing that will come to mind are all our long and late practices that left us shacked yet somehow filled up our school lives a great deal. I will never forget how we always went late for dazu :x (but improved subsequently!), all the nonsense we crapped up during xiaozu (together with laozhou), and all the whispering here and there and trying to shush people up (especially a particular duo COUGH)...it's really amazing lah.

I really really really want to thank all the people who helped out even though they were not officially part of RJCO: Sherry, Hui Min, Yiliang and Serene. You guys slogged it out with us so much with nary a complaint...haha, I think SYF has given you guys a good taste of old memories, eh? Will be more than happy if you people decide that you miss CO so much you just HAVE to come back :p and help to accompany our dear Fujun and Joyce!

Thanks to Xiao Le, for being our wonderful SL - I think she deserves a huge round of applause for all the efforts put into making xianyue a really good section - what with having to juggle with listening to gaohu, erhu and zhonghu all at the same time. And for her exponentially increasing sms bills after trying to message all of you all the stuff I tried to get her to collate or send out.

And of course, all of you :)

I just googled the composer Joshua Chan and Hing-yan Chan, hehe Joshua Chan is the one who composed your SYF set piece.. and he looks like this..

Joshua Chan (Associate Professor), Ph.D. (HKU), has written more than 150 compositions and arrangements, in diversified styles, for various media including orchestral, electronic, chamber, vocal, theatre, ballet, and pop recording. International events in which Chan's work were featured include: UNESCO International Rostrum of Composers (1988, 1993, 2001); ISCM World Music Days (1995 & 2002); International Computer Music Conference (1993); Asian Composers' League Conference – in the concert by New Zealand Symphony Orchestra (1992); featured concert of the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra (1998); ballet performances by the London Studio Centre (2002, 7 cities in UK); session concert of the Singapore Chinese Orchestra (2001); Hong Kong Arts Festival (1984, 1994, 1998-2001), etc. Chan's works have been published on 10 compact discs of 7 different labels. 1. do your homework. or you'll find urself like me, trying to mug the crap out of my nose. this chase is endless, and now i've a runny nose.

Hmm..not a post since 7th July 2006. I shall stop the rot now. Hehz.

J2s, prelims start in less than a month's time and I wish everyone the best of luck. Just hang in there for 3 months and you can enjoy a new life after that, although new does not equate to enjoyable especially for guys -.- . Think about it, JC is the last time you can actually belong to a fixed class as university education is more liberal and doesnt confine you to one place. Treasure the best of time left with your friends and most importantly, do well for the upcoming examinations!!

J1s, promos begin a month after the prelims kick off. Hope you all can do well for exams as well as the SYF next year la. Spend your holidays meaningfully =)

Hmm...odd time to be awake now. Tells a lot about the life we lead nowadays. Haha.

See that orange ET on the bottom left side of the picture? Hahahaha. He's the chair.. but fondly known as the footstool too.

These two aliens here.. sigh one is a feirce one.. the female.. HAHA.

The other is THE JOKE OF THE CENTURY. Otherwise known as "ghim moh" for his fiery lion's roar. Or zhou jie lun too. An excellent rapper too who injects singlish into his rapping.

These are the species known as gaohuians. They are the most humanlike compared to the rest of those in XYZ. Hahaha. The one on the top left hand corner is especially deh.

This is probably the last time the J1s are seeing some of you, so on behalf on the J1s, I wish the J2s all the best in your A levels; for Khoo, all the best with your "yang guo" and your Yong Siew Toh thingy; J3s, even thought we don know some of you, all the best in your future endeavors and lastly xz, all the best in your major studies :D :D :D...

5 months...7 days...

and now, in an instant, concert is over.

but well - i guess it didn't exactly feel like an instant - i was really enjoying every moment of it, even when we were so stressed and scared when rehearsal was so messy...i think it turned out better than what we were expecting given our rehearsal lol. =)=)

thank you so much to the j2s - khoo for being such a wonderful inspiring sl (think everyone unanimously agrees she totally rocks haha), zongjin and kwan for being the ever-busy chairs who secured us this concert and spent so much time running the admin, marcus for being a great senior to sit with, ket for being my lovely tu2di4!, tze kwan for always being cheery, yan shan our darling shouxi, shuyu for her tireless work for programme booklet and costumes, vivian, xian wen, peiyi, yan qing, li qi, mindy - even xuanzhong and xunqi for coming down to help! oh man i'm so going to miss all of you. =(

oh yeah and can't forget my wacky batchmates wahaha. minggy, kb, jj, xiaole, sarah, yiting! =D
let's strive hard for the rest of the year(s)!

concert may have ended, but the memories of the process will always be remembered. think about how it has only been around less than 5 months since we got to know each other, and how a passion for co music has bonded all of us together so well. it's remarkable - and it's a legacy that will always remain.

The Final Push

Our concert is about 100 hours from now, or maybe less. It was a few months ago when I was thinking that my days in CO(including al the other J2s) are down to 100. But the transition between the literary meanings between months and days is a little too hard to accept. After 5.5 years in CO, this YI concert is a fitting testament and tribute to all our time,toil and sweat we have put in since we first put our fingers on our instruments. For most of us, it's our first time standing on the Esplanade Stage for our last school concert. Our Last Concert As a School Orchestra- At the Esplanade. Nothing can be more meaningful than that.

Many of us are probably worn out, drained and tired by the incessant practices and yearned for a rest. It is undeniable that a break is a great lure from the monotony we experience, but deep down, all of us would miss it. Even if some of us do not miss Chinese music or our instruments, there are always the events and of course, friends to look back upon and immense yourselves in those sweet fun-loving memories of the past. CO itself is a very special and individual family-Our XYZ is also befitting of that title. Think of all the outings we had... be it East Coast Park, Plaza Singapura Swensens, Suntec City Sky Garden, Orchard, Kwan's House and perpertually Junction 8. There is always something worth recalling. Or recall all the CO stuff we have done together. I'm sure last year's SYF/Concert Preparations were pretty memorable. We were always the latest section to return for night practice because we always took the longest time to eat at S-11. Publicity Comm People if you recall....the hours spent on cutting, painting and drawing. And even all the funny and weird stuff done at the backstage before our concert at the PAC began. And of course all the photos taken, every single one of them telling a different story.
J2s...it has been a great time in CO.

J1s have added much life and zest to our XYZ with many colourful characters which do not require much elaboration. Please make the best of your time in RJCO. Think about it, though RJCO technically only stands at 1.5 years in your life, you will take back more memories than you ever will from this short experience, or at least for me.

Concert is just this weekend.

Auspicium Melioris Aevi

Hi People,

looks like things are a little dead here isnt it? Haha. Well, Auspicium is over as you have witnessed on Saturday. Months of hard work and CO practices missed since Mid-December just because of this event. There may have been unhappiness, dread and apathy right at the start when the silhoutte of this oddly concocted blend of music was just taking shape. However, the moment it's over and looking back at the times when we played those notes that are (and still) deeply etched into our memories, one cant help but savour the grandeur of the event, and not everyone can relish the opportunity to perform in front of several elite members of the Cabinet.

Auspicium practices were fun and interesting. It's not everyday you get to sit beside someone playing a violin while your hands are clutching to the precious erhu. To be immersed in an atmosphere of western music may appear to be a culture shock at first given years of familiarity with chinese music, but it gives a sense of freshness as you start to discover other forms, variations and styles of music. The Chamber Ensemble people to me, were rather professional in their practices due to their silent work attitude and their conductor is very nice, encouraging and funny at times. So while you peer the moving bows of the violins beside you through the corner of your eye, you can hear the sounds of the Band and the voices of the Chorale during practices in the Chamber Ensemble Room and PAC. To put together such 4 different musical groups in one song isnt an easy task and may not appeal to everyone, but on the whole it was an interesting and enlightening experience.

Of course, there were the low times when we had some disheartening experiences there and dreaded the amount of time spent on just one song (2 if you count the school song). The more disillusioning fact was that Auspicium practices always overlapped CO practices and on many Wednesdays, we leave the CO room while everyone is beginning to tune and only come back to see the place shrouded in darkness or silence. Haha, there were many occasions when we bemoaned our indignant presence in the PAC while the others were in the CO room. Practice was fun when everyone plays the song well, but on most days, we spent most of time stoning and sometimes on the verge of dozing off. Our best performance was not on the Opening Ceremony Day, but on the day we did the recording which you can listen to on the CD given. That day was 2 or 3 Saturdays before Common test and we spent 8 or more hours in the PAC doing snippets and parts of the song that are to be joined together to form the complete song. There were comments like "The strings are not accurate" but at the end of the day, it was comparably the best Auspicium practice we had.

On the other hand, there were also many comical moments as well. A few events include: Throwing tissue paper and grape sweet wrappers into someone's gaohu soundbox; throwing erhu gong up at the end of the song and catching it; posing the victory sign after the whole song that set everyone laughing; erhu circular swirling technique with a curvy sound; drawing Pokemon cards etc. No prizes for guessing who were involved. The more interesting moments came on the past few days, when we missed all lessons on Thursday and Friday because of rehearsals. Although we spent majority of the time stoning, we made it to full use through talking and laughing. Definitely, we have met and got to know better a few interesting and distinct people in other musical groups that we will probably remember for a long time to come.

And on Friday, we had some inter-CCA sharing session which was quite worthwhile. Zongjin taught a few band members the basics of the gaohu and erhu and I taught the Chorale chairperson the erhu. We also got to have a feel of the violins which were intricately crafted and produced beautiful sounds, but its weighty price tag made it an unsound decision to buy a violin. Interestingly, I also managed to play the scales on the bass clarinet and Zongjin had a great attempt at the trombone and Weiyuan had a good time with the french horn and trumpet. Weixiong made a new friend in his flute counterpart in band since last year. Khoo Hui Ling also got to know the theory of foldable chairs, rigid music stands and stage layouts better after being honourably volunteered on Thursday for supposed child labour required during the ceremony and rehearsals. Lunch breaks also tend to be unusually long and we managed to have lunch at RI Shaw Foundation Ceremonial Hall(the food is quite good) and showed Yanshan and co. the RI library which looks more cosy and comfortable for sleeping now.

And on Saturday itself, we performed the song in front of the PM, other members of the cabinet, parents and our fellow Rafflesians and some were very excited to be in the presence of the PM and even more so, when you have the PM looking at you when you are sitting in full view of him while playing the erhu/gaohu. By the way, it was very warm on stage and I didnt enjoy the feeling of so much perspiration dripping down your neck while playing the song and wearing that thick polo tee shirt. And after the school song, it all ended, with our rather crumpled scores a fitting tribute to our performance and the effort put in over the last few months. What's left - are the scores, the CD and our memories.

Another Story to Share...Haha

Once upon a time there was a bunch of tiny frogs.... who arranged a running competition. The goal was to reach the top of a very high tower. A big crowd had gathered around the tower to see the race and cheer on the contestants.... The race began....

Honestly: No one in crowd really believed that the tiny frogs would reach the top of the tower. You heard statements such as: "Oh, WAY too difficult!!" "They will NEVER make it to the top." or: "Not a chance that they will succeed. The tower is too high!" The tiny frogs began collapsing. One by one.... Except for those, who in a fresh tempo, were climbing higher and higher....The crowd continued to yell, "It is too difficult!!! No one will make it!"

More tiny frogs got tired and gave up.... But ONE continued higher and higher and higher.... This one wouldn't give up! At the end everyone else had given up climbing the tower. Except for the one tiny frog who, after a big effort, was the only one who reached the top! THEN all of the other tiny frogs naturally wanted to know how this one frog managed to do it? A contestant asked the tiny frog how he had found the strength to succeed and reach the goal?

It turned out.... That the winner, the tiny frog was deaf.

The wisdom of this story is: Never listen to other people's tendencies to be negative or pessimistic.... because they take your most wonderful dreams and wishes away from you -- the ones you have in your heart.

Always think of the power words have. Because everything you hear and read will affect your actions! Therefore: ALWAYS be....POSITIVE!

And above all: Be DEAF when people tell YOU that you cannot fulfill your dreams!

Hello, I think everyone out there is as tired as I am. Term 2 starts : homework continues piling up by stacks and our beloved concert is fast approaching. CO practice on a 1346 basis on top of our school curriculum is no joke, but I guess everyone is trying to do their best to balance everything. J1s seems to have plenty of lecture tests, a lot more than what the J2s had in their first year at RJC. J2s are still in the postmortem (I hate it when the tutors use this word when going through papers) period of CT.

Just a short story below, think some of you might have read it before though....

Two men, both seriously ill, occupied the same hospital room. One man was allowed to sit up in his bed for an hour each afternoon to help drain the fluid from his lungs. His bed was next to the room's only window. The other man had to spend all his time flat on his back. The men talked for hours on end. They spoke of their wives and families, their homes, their jobs, their involvement in the military service, where they had been on vacation.

Every afternoon when the man in the bed by the window could sit up, he would pass the time by describing to his roommate all the things he could see outside the window.The man in the other bed began to live for those one hour periods where his world would be broadened and enlivened by all the activity and color of the world outside.

The window overlooked a park with a lovely lake. Ducks and swans played on the water while children sailed their model boats. Young lovers walked arm in arm amidst flowers of every color and a fine view of the city skyline could be seen in the distance.As the man by the window described all this in exquisite detail, the man on the other side of the room would close his eyes and imagine the picturesque scene.One warm afternoon the man by the window described a parade passing by.Although the other man couldn't hear the band - he could see it. In his mind's eye as the gentleman by the window portrayed it with descriptive words.

Days and weeks passed. One morning, the day nurse arrived to bring water for their baths only to find the lifeless body of the man by the window, who had died peacefully in his sleep. She was saddened and called the hospital attendants to take the body away.As soon as it seemed appropriate, the other man asked if he could be moved next to the window. The nurse was happy to make the switch, and after making sure he was comfortable, she left him alone.Slowly, painfully, he propped himself up on one elbow to take his first look at the real world outside.He strained to slowly turn to look out the window beside the bed.

It faced a blank wall. The man asked the nurse what could have compelled his deceased roommate who had described such wonderful things outside this windowThe nurse responded that the man was blind and could not even see the wall.She said, "Perhaps he just wanted to encourage you."

Thanks to everyone for wishing me on my birthday.. :):) haha. So weird being 18. cuz i dun feel 18. like wad shuyu said.. "CANT BELIEVE U ARE 18"... haha. oh well, maybe in in denial of the aging process.. buahah. but it's kinda scary to think that 10 years back i was in p2 and 10 years from now i'd be 28. Hey XYZ peeps,

J2 common test is over!!! It was a nightmare turned reality, but the main issue is that IT HAS ENDED...haha... J2s can relax for the time being until we face the music once the papers with red markings resurface once again.

J1s seems very busy now with the reopening of the school term(What happened to our calls for a mass outing?)...

Hmm plenty of stuff in term 2 too... Opening Ceremony April 8th (affected people only)... Esplanade concert...and lots of stuff too.

With the passing of CT1, the next thing to worry is our concert in 6-7 weeks time. Hope having the opportunity to perform at the Esplanade will spur everyone and rise to the occasion on the faithful day of 7th May 2005. The Esplanade factor should make us do the best everything - for our reputation, our school name, RJCO and of course, our music and ourselves.

Hm talk about stressed. That day I was at home trying to study music common tests. So I blasted Beethoven off my speakers. And while I was reading the scores, my mind suddenly drifted off and i started humming Zhan Ma. Until my mom woke me up from my blissful daydream by telling me I was singing out of tune. GARH!

haven't used blogger in awhile. anyway, thanks to whoever started this blog and happy bdae xiaole! sorry i didn't attend the kbox thing to celebrate your bdae. hmm is it only guanyue and xianyue that have blogs and if aaron (whoever he is) is so nice to link us, then how come we never link guanyue?

ahh and i wish someone brought camera! i want photos. now have to wait until school reopens to see it. ray, it's okay la no one can really tell the orientation of the gong1 from a distance.. most people don't even know the gong1 stays between the xians.

yanshan so evil. bully juniors.

anyway, i still think guanyue is crazy to have a green shirt. imagine the girls.. they'll look like vegetables/plants. elmo or cookie monster still looks better =)

Haha, thanks Aaron for linking our blog to guanyue. Anyway, I guess everyone is rather preoccupied now. J2's have the much doomed Common test 1 crushing us just next week - time is of the essence, all the best! J1s..hope you enjoyed your 1 week of holidays, probably filled with outings and stuff. Haha, cue to J1s - plan an outing after our common test in a fashion or manner favoured by everyone!

There have been a few birthdays this month and another one approaching as the month of March comes to an end. Hope you have wished all these people Happy Birthday!
